Βύρων και Αριστείδης Πάλλης
Στη δεκαετία του 1950 ,στην αρχή,στη Στοά Κουρτζή,αργοτερα στην οδό Χίου 2, στα Λαδάδικα λειτούργησε το μοναδικό ιδιωτικό εργαστήριο χημικών αναλύσεων των αδελφών Πάλλη.Είναι η περίοδος της μεγάλης ακμής των εξαγωγών του λαδιού και οι απαιτήσεις των αγορών μεταπολεμικά πια ,επέβαλαν και την προσαρμογή των εμπόρων σε συνθήκες ελέγχων και πιστοποίησης της γνησιότητας του προϊόντος που εξήγαγαν. Ήταν εξ άλλου και επιδίωξη των ίδιων των εμπόρων απο την προπολεμική ακόμα περίοδο και πίστη οτι με επιστημονικά μέσα θα αποδείκνυαν τα πλεονεκτήματα του λεσβιακού λαδιού στις ξένες αγορές.Αυτή λοιπόν την ανάγκη του επιστημονικού ελέγχου δια της χημικής ανάλυσης κάλυπταν οι δύο χημικοί Αριστείδης και Βύρων Πάλλης.
Με συνέπεια,σωστή επαγγελματική αντίληψη,με υπευθυνότητα και ευσυνειδησία εξασφάλιζαν τσ σπσραίτητα πιστοποιητικά και τα δεδομένα των αναλύσεων που έπρεπε να συνοδεύουν το λάδι για να ταξιδέψει και να διοχετευθεί στις αγορές μέσα σε συνθήκες ανταγωνισμού ή τάσεων νοθείας με σπορέλαια.Μέσα στο σύμπλεγμα των επαγγελμάτων που αποτελούσαν το cluster των Λαδάδικων εξασφάλιζαν στους εμπόρους τις αποδείξεις που τους ήταν απαραίτητες για να λειτουργήσουν με κανόνες αξιοπιστίας στις εμπορικές τους συναλλαγές.Παράλληλα τους προμήθευαν με τα απαιτούμενα υλικά για τις οξυμετρήσεις και σε πολλές περιπτώσεις οξυμετρήσεις έκαναν και οι ίδιοι σε κάθε ενδιαφερόμενο έμπορο,μεσίτη ή παραγωγό.Ακόμη έκαναν αναλύσεις σε νερό ή σε κρασί.
Το χημικό εργαστήριο λειτούργησε μέχρι τη δεκαετία του 1980. Να σημειωθεί οτι σ’όλη την περίοδο της λειτουργίας του ήταν το μοναδικό ιδιωτικό χημικό εργαστήριο στο νησί και σ’όλο το Βόρειο Αιγαίο.
Ο Αριστείδης Πάλλης εκτός απο το εργαστήριο υπηρέτησε ως διευθυντής στο βιοχημικό εργαστήριο του Βοστάνειου Νοσοκομείου Μυτιλήνης μέχρι το 1987 και ο Βύρων Πάλλης υπηρέτησε την εκπαίδευση διδάσκοντας χημεία σε μαθητές Γυμνασίου και υποψηφίους των εξετάσεων για την Τριτοβάθμια Εκπαίδευση.

Aristides and Byron Brothers
A private chemical laboratory, specialized in analytical work, owned by Pallis’ Brothers was founded in Ladadika during the ’50, in the Kourtzis Arcade but later it moved to Chios St. This laboratory was the only one in the area at this time when the exports of olive oil were at their high peak, the international markets were requiring regular quality assessment the of olive oil products. In addition to that, the exporters, even before the war there was a principle among the exporters that the use of scientific methods would show the advantages and the quality superiority of the Lesbian olive oil. The two chemists, Aristides and Byron Pallis, more than accomplished these requirements.
Working with professionalism, responsibility and conscientiousness, they were making sure that the merchants had the right certificates and analytical data to accompany the oil exported to international markets under conditions of fierce competition including the adulteration of the olive oil. Their contribution within the cluster of the different professions working together for the exportation of the olive oil was of paramount importance. They had to provide the merchants with all the documents, necessary for them to be trust worthy during their commercial dealings. At the same time, they were providing the merchants, dealers and producers with the necessary chemical reagents so they could themselves carry out the acidimetry of their products. In addition the Pallis’ brothers were carrying out analytical work for water and wine.
Their analytical laboratory was active until the ‘80s. It is noteworthy that it was the only private chemical laboratory not only on the Island of Lesvos but also in the Northern Aegean Sea.
Aristides Pallis in addition to his private work in his analytical laboratory has also worked as a Director in the Biochemical Laboratory of the County Hospital of Lesvos (Vostanion Hospital). At the same time Byron Pallis worked in the secondary education sector, teaching chemistry as well as preparing pupils for matriculation exams for the University.
